About The Producers

This coffee is produced by 20 women from the indigenous Nahuas ethnic group in the Zongolica region of Veracruz, Mexico. This area boasts a rich ancestral heritage, with community members sharing their knowledge of plants, rivers, and the environment through storytelling passed down from their elders.

Coffee farms in Zongolica are designed as agro-ecosystems, focusing on the broader environmental impact of farming and striving to balance energy and nutrients to preserve regional biodiversity. The women utilize sustainable intercropping techniques, growing coffee alongside other crops and native plants, which helps to enhance biodiversity and decrease the need for fertilizers and pesticides.

The coffee is carefully processed using hand-cranked de-pulpers, washed, and dried on patios for about 15 days. Each of the 20 producers maintains the same careful practices on her own farm, contributing to the collective quality of the lot. By managing their own milling and drying processes, the group improves the coffee's quality while saving costs associated with third-party processing.

Through collaboration, the women efficiently share resources and produce enough coffee to enter specialty markets, allowing them to add value to their product by enhancing its quality, making it more attractive to specialty coffee roasters.

The women who produced this coffee are part of the NKG BLOOM initiative, which works to ensure the long-term sustainability of green coffee supplies by equipping smallholder farmers with the tools they need to thrive and rise out of poverty. The initiative originated in 2014, in response to the coffee rust crisis. Since then, it has positively impacted 4,520 producers, renovated over 5,300 hectares of coffee, and invested more than $34 million in farm improvements.

NKG BLOOM further supports producers by providing customized service packages that may include financing, quality inputs, seedlings, agronomy and business training, market access, and innovative coffee technologies.

How To Brew This Washed Process Single Origin

A 1:14 brew ratio of cooler than usual water of around 190-200°F yields tasteful, flavorful cups.
